NCIS season 19: Bishop and Gibbs secretly working together as fans tip undercover plot

Ellie Bishop (played by Emily Wickersham) and Leroy Gibbs (Mark Harmon) both appear to have made devastating exits at the end of NCIS season 18. With the action-packed CBS drama hoped to come back to screens in just a few short months, some viewers are convinced the two agents are set to make a thrilling return.

Emily Wickersham has confirmed her departure from the series, but a number of NCIS fans are convinced her time as Ellie Bishop isn’t over yet.

Meanwhile, her former team leader Leroy Gibbs is presumed d**d after his newly completed boat was rigged to explode.

Thankfully, the last minutes of this year’s exhilarating finale, ‘Rule 91’, confirmed Gibbs was able to swim away from the wreckage.

Although series lead Mark Harmon is reportedly taking on a reduced role in the upcoming 19th season, he’s still on the trail of an elusive serial k***er with journalist Marcie Warren (Pam Dawber)

However, audience speculation has offered up a convincing counterpoint to what apparently went down at the end of season 18.

One viewer posted on Reddit: “Gibbs and Bishop are teaming up undercover???? That was my thought.”

In last week’s riveting conclusion to the season, Bishop burned bridges with the NCIS team in order to start a new job working undercover for the CIA.

After being implemented in an NSA leak, Bishop revealed the truth to her fellow agent Nick Torres (Wilmer Valderrama), with whom she shared a tender goodbye kiss.

Despite her dramatic departure, some theories suggest Bishop’s undercover work will eventually link up with Gibbs’ next mission.

With Gibbs currently on indefinite suspension, his work with Bishop and the CIA could eventually be his way back onto the NCIS team.

It may simply be the case that the ex-Agent in Charge simply faked his d**th to throw off the scent of the k***er, whom he discovered had been bugging his house.

However, other fans are convinced that Bishop and Gibbs both seemingly making a hasty departure at the same time was too convenient to be mere coincidence.

Although the k***er is still at large, could Gibbs stay ‘dead’ in order to meet up with Bishop on her next mission?

Another fan mused: “Bishop and Gibbs are both portrayed as disgraced agents at the end of the season, so their fates align well for that.”

Others have noted a similarity to former series regular Ziva David (Cote de Pablo), who was seemingly k***ed off only to be brought back in season 17.

One more viewer added: “I’m hoping it’s a reverse Ziva, where it seems like she’s leaving the show and then psych!”

Unfortunately, an emotional goodbye from Emily Wickersham herself on Instagram seems to indicate this won’t be the case.

Before thanking the cast and crew, she wrote: “Hangin this hat and jacket up. What a great ride it’s been.”

Still, plenty of fans are still hoping this is all one big misdirect and both Bishop and Gibbs will be returning to their regular duties at some point in season 19.

NCIS is available to watch on CBS.
